http://sharingisthepoint.org/vbf/showthread.php?215298-CosmOS-v8-1-1-ReturnOfNights-Nov-2013
Just starting off the CosmOS v8.1.1 mod (Windows 8.1), it's far from perfect/complete, but done enough to speed people up installing 8.1 to their PC's I decided to update my builder to support Windows 8.1 yesterday and today, this is the produced OS it generated (so not long spent working on it). I removed nVidia, AMD, Intel drivers and AVG etc from ssWPI as they were quite large and readily available from LastOS: http://www.lastos.org/team/AppRepository/list.php?dir=&sort=date&order=desc The size is still 6.68gb You just put them into the ISO, in ssAppsInstalls or ppAppsInstalls. You will have to delete the "ssWPI_App_DB.ini" from the folders you update or it will not show the new apps in ssWPI, you can right click the list in ssWPI and pick Re-Scan for items to create new DB files (if using it from USB or an extracted folder prior to adding it back to an ISO). This is self activating with KMSpico 9.3 and fully automated until the end of the install where you must reboot manually to enable UAC again. You can switch the default account "User" (Home User) to your Outlook/Hotmail account without losing any of the tweaks/app installs. I've included a "Change To Online Account.jpg" to the root of the ISO that shows how to do this. I set auto update to notify you but not download automatically, this is easily changed from the settings. Included in ssWPI is Classic Shell for if you really hate the Metro/Modern Interface. The default password for "User" is "password", this was required as an empty password is not allowed at the log on stage of setup. This is the first Windows 8+ mod I have done, so I don't expect it to be perfect and as I've only spent a short time on it (I don't get a lot of time to spare lately) it's not as complete as it could be. The template/preset is at LastOS.org: http://www.lastos.org/forum/index.php?threads/ssosmodder-v13-11-01-win-8-1.988/ This is NOT compatible with UEFI without using the swap USB trick to place a NTFS USB in after booting off a FAT32 UEFI one, or if your able to build your own with just the architecture you need. Free legit windows ;) Sourced: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/49539-Windows-8-1-Pro-WMC-generic-activation-tokens-creation I followed this and used my Free MS WMC key to activate, took me about an hour and a half to do all this, but I'll never have to do it again now ;) The final step you'll want to do is place the CosmOS post install stuff from your USB/ISO/DVD and use Settings + ssWPI to configure it to have the same tweaks and apps you would have with a full CosmOS. I am sure there is ways to make you own silent activated ISO, but it will only work on your PC. ------------------------ BTW this trick only works if you have activated on the same machine with the Win 8 WMC key before (you can't use your purchased WMC key on new hardware or with the above method).

Well that was short lived, seems the KMSpico servers are offline now, so no one else will have their CosmOS 8.1.1 activated automatically anymore and there isn't a good solution to this yet. I knew it would be a bad idea to rely on an online method, but I only posted this to see the amount of people who wanted an 8.1 mod, turned out it wasn't enough for me to bother with it anymore, expect a new win 7 mod one day and a Win 9 mod, but it's the end of all things Windows 8, MS should have been promoting the KMS server activation, pirates will always want their OS then and may even buy some stuff from their App Store, also so that people felt Windows was still relevant in today's world. If I see a solution for activation turn up, I'll post it here. -EDIT- http://thepiratebay.sx/torrent/9133616/ If your desperate to activate, the above is said to work. -EDIT- If you want to remove the KMSpico from being installed: X:\sources\$PostLogonApps\KMSpico.exe <- Open the ISO or open your USB disk and delete this file.

http://www.LastOS.org/team/public/KMSpico.exe I have not tested the new version to see if it's silent or works, but he has updated it to have a virtual network driver to make it activate again. Placing this file in the \sources\$PostLogonApps\ and replacing the existing file should be all you need to do. If someone tests this and it doesn't work silently, then extract it from the .exe which is a sfx made in WinRAR and install it manually by double clicking on the extracted .exe and follow the prompts. If anyone tests this please share your results. If your machine is not currently activated you can also test this simply by running the KMSpico.exe sfx file to see if it activates. Keep an eye on this thread for Details: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/49108-KMSpico-Official-Thread

Seems the KMSpico went Stable yesterday, so I updated it: http://www.lastos.org/team/public/KMSpico.exe I've not tested to see if it's still silent, but it should be if he left it as the same installer software.

RON Thank You so much for this release. I switched out the KMSpico in the ISO with the one you linked and everything activated silently without any problems at all. What more could anyone need from an ISO? :D I opened the image with Daemon and created a bootable USB plus transferred all the files effortlessly in the CosmOS Main Menu AWESOME!!!!! I just gotta figure out now how to restore some drivers I backed up with Driver Magician Lite. The selection of programs on the ISO is absolutely amazing. Practically everything one could want and more. Now I just gotta learn in what ways 8 is different from 7, but everything is running awesome here. I've been using your releases since way back in the LXP days and actually I still have your very first releases on CD in my binder. If it's got a ReturnOfNights name on the release, you can be sure that it's gonna be awesome and top notch. Thank You again for this Awesome release RON :)

Well thank you for reporting the KMSpico works now, if only there was more time in a day I would have checked before sharing it :) Anyway here's a tip for being helpful: Copy the entire drivers folder that you backed up to: C:\Windows\Inf\MyDrivers <-Make the folder yourself of any folder name will do. Then if you go into device manager and right click on the hardware you want to install the drivers for it'll find them without you having to browse for them. I have been using this site to post install missing drivers: http://drp.su/ It's very good at what it does and is self Updatable, the packs are no good for integrating to the install, nor is there any reason you should have over 60gb of uncompressed drivers you don't need on every install, so it's perfect as it is (take a few goes to figure out it's tricks though). You also could use a tool SAD, which will scan the driver packs in a similar way, but IMO I would rather a complete pack that is constantly up to date than a work around solution, it is handy for post install scanning, but I just use the MyDrivers trick above and delete that folder after the install completes, that way they are compressed inside the install.wim so don't take long to extract, they get copied out to the root \inf folder if they are actually needed, so it's safe to delete them again. I managed to use Windows 8.1 to complete all the newest projects I've released, so really the only thing about Windows 8 you don't learn to live with is having UAC on so Metro apps work and giving up the GOD Admin account, but it's safer to use a normal Admin account anyway, just a few prompts here and there, which is great for ssWPI, because you get one prompt and it installs as many apps/games as you need. I modded CosmOS to disable UAC until after the first time ssWPI runs to avoid making the installation not silent (Permission Prompts on first logon) so that is why your able to pre-select your apps from ssWPI in the LivePE and not get prompted to allow it post install, one reboot later and it's back on again using the same $PostLogonApps folder that KMSpico is in. It's great having standard methods for doing things, how easy is it to add your own mods to it or update things... especially when you have it on USB. I actually can't imagine my life without SetupS technology in it anymore - but I bet it would suck :D
======================================================================================================================= +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ======================================================================================================================= http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/49539-Windows-8-1-Pro-WMC-generic-activation-tokens-creation
Windows 8.1 Pro WMC generic activation tokens creation What this post is about A procedure for creating a set of generic activation tokens (data.dat, tokens.dat) for Windows 8.1 Pro WMC. Using these tokens allows the installation and activation of Windows 8.1 Pro WMC if you have a Pro WMC upgrade key, without the need for a Windows 8/8.1 Pro key. Generic in this case means that the tokens don't contain any personally identifiable information or product keys except general/default ones, and the tokens are not specific to any one PC. What this is NOT about Using this procedure does NOT allow you to: * activate Windows 8.1 Enterprise * activate Windows 8.1 Pro (without WMC) * activate Windows 8.1 Pro WMC without a WMC upgrade key * activate with an unused WMC upgrade key from the free promotion from 2012 (probably, untested) * reuse the same WMC upgrade key on several computers and activate online If you are reusing a previously activated WMC upgrade key, it can only be reused on the identical computer that it was previously activated on, if you want to activate online. Where the idea is from When you upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 through the Windows Store, you are not asked to reenter your product key. The upgrade process can therefore migrate the activation tokens from v1 used in Windows 8 to v2 used in Windows 8.1. At the same time, several people posted saying that they successfully upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 via the Store, even though they were doing the upgrade on Windows 8 Pro WMC which was previously KMS + WMC upgrade key activated, and the system staid activated. We must therefore conclude that a) the upgrade process is able to migrate v1 tokens to v2 even if no retail Pro key was used b) the resulting v2 tokens accept a WMC upgrade key Required ingredients * Windows 8 Pro retail ISO (for example, en_windows_8_x86_dvd_915417.iso from MSDN) * Microsoft Toolkit (for example, v2.4.9) * KB2871389 update from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2871389 , matching your system (x86/x64) (this is the only update necessary to make the Windows 8.1 upgrade visible in the Windows Store) The procedure (duration 1.5+ hours depending on Internet speed) (the use of a Virtual Machine is highly recommended) 0) Disconnect from the Internet 1) Install Windows 8 Pro using the Windows 8 Pro KMS client setup key (GVLK) ending J8CK4 2) KMS activate using Microsoft Toolkit 3) Use the "Add feature" function to upgrade to WMC, using the Pro WMC default key ending QGJXW 4) Install the KB2871389 update 5) Connect to the Internet 6) Visit the Windows Store and start the Windows 8.1 upgrade 7) Go have a lunch break, watch a movie or take a nap 8) Once the Windows 8.1 upgrade completes, the procedure is complete The result You will find a set of activation tokens (data.dat, tokens.dat) in \Windows\System32\spp\store\2.0. Stop SPPSVC, then take a copy of them (data.dat is a hidden file). These are the tokens you are looking for. What you can do with the tokens (tested and confirmed to work) For example, you have a WMC upgrade key that you previously used in Windows 8. On the same PC, you can make a clean installation of Windows 8.1 Pro WMC, insert the tokens you just created, and enter your WMC upgrade key. The key will be accepted and the system is activatable. Sample procedure: 1) Install Windows 8.1 Pro with default key ending C9WKB 2) Upgrade to WMC using default key ending JK7QT 3) Stop SPPSVC 4) Overwrite the files in \Windows\System32\spp\store\2.0 with the tokens created above 5) Insert your WMC upgrade key with "slmgr /ipk wmc-upgrade-key" from elevated command prompt 6) If the WMC upgrade key matches the PC, you can activate online Conclusion The above procedure results in a set of generic activation tokens, which can be inserted into a clean installation of Windows 8.1 Pro WMC (or Windows 8.1 Pro upgraded to WMC), without the need for a Pro key. The system will accept a WMC upgrade key and will activate, provided that the key used matches the PC. It is therefore possible to install and activate Windows 8.1 Pro WMC with nothing but a WMC upgrade key. The tokens contain no personally identifiable information and can in theory be safely shared and reused on any PC. The tokens could also be used to create a ProWMC AIO. Update It has been confirmed that Microsoft reversed a block they introduced at the beginning of 2013. The block made it impossible to activate a WMC upgrade on top of a Windows 8 Pro install that was KMS activated. Since the block has been reversed, it is once again possible to activate Windows 8 Pro with KMS, and then activate a WMC upgrade on top of that (either using an existing key matching that PC, or a freshly bought key). Warning: It is possible that the procedure described in this post results in an activated Windows 8.1 Pro WMC only because this block has been removed, and that in the future the block may return and may break this procedure.

Well, it's still possible to activate it (the WMC promo key) offline (via phone) at different machine though. I've done exactly that with success just a few days ago. No idea how many times it can be done, but it's been the 3rd time with that particular key.

Certainly. I'm generally more concerned about online activation. The procedure described in the OP is also useful for those going for phone activation, since it allows the entry of the WMC upgrade key in the first place.

FYI I used Advanced Tokens Manager http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/27341-Advanced-Tokens-Manager-The-Activation-Backup-Solution.

 About:

Advanced Tokens Manager is a safer application that help you with the Windows and Office Activation Backup and Restore. Thanks Kelorgo!!! :worthy: The reason it didn't work before (I am ashamed to say) was a stupid mistake of mine (low diskspace), so my second attempt worked fine! So after 2 full setup 8.0/ add WMC/ upgrade to 8.1 runs, and another 8.1Pro install/ add WMC run, I guess I now shifted approx. 20gb around, for a nice 200kb zip file (containing the .dat files). I actually think it's pretty stupid that no diskspace warning is given before attempting the 8.1 upgrade, but of course this was my own error. I even tried switching off Defender before the upgrade (but that resulted in the not very helpful error message: "Something went wrong")... This reminded me a bit of my attempt to carry out an updaterun in Auditmode (Enterprise version of 8.1) last week, which is no longer possible in 8.1. In this case, there's no error either, your PC just sits there "Searching for updates" without any information about what's wrong. So now I'll try making a "8.1ProWMC" .wim, like I did last year with 8.0. I guess it's the same procedure? I know Ambidav's howto still
The new "Preactivated/ Auto activating Win8.1ProWMC" .wim works like a charm!!!!! The last part actually went relatively quickly and without major hickups. I'm now writing from an activated 8.1ProWMC! The hardest part was actually setting the ProfessionalWMC tag with: ImageX /flags "ProfessionalWMC" /info install.wim 1 "Windows 8.1 ProWMC" "Windows 8.1 ProWMC" I couldn't find the right imagex.exe anywhere (in W8.1)?!! Luckily I had a version tucked away somewhere, can't remember where that one's from exactly, but wasn't ImageX removed in Windows 8.1? Then what is the new method of setting that ProfessionalWMC flag? This is what I did, in a nutshell: Mount 8.1 Retail Pro/Core (index 1=Pro), Enable NetFX3, Set-Edition: ProfessionalWMC, Copy new .dat files, Set-Productkey (Free WMC promo nov. 2012), Unmount, ImageX /Flags etc. Thanks Kelorgo! (Now if I only can get rid of that new animation at the end of setup. I use JFX's WinNTSetup for all installs, and it can remove the previous setup animation, but it seems 8.1 introduces a new one)

ImageX is not actually part of the OS, it wasn't in Windows 8 either. It's from the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK). The version for Windows 8.1: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39982

Thanks. I thought setting the flag might be possible with the latest DISM already, but I guess I'm wrong. Actually, JFX also has a nice tool to download only the necessary tools from the huge ADK iso (pretty clever tool actually). Just google for GetWAIKTools. Well, that version didn't work for me a few minutes ago, but that might have been the sheer excitement...

Congrats! ... Same here ... can also confirm that an *unused* free WMC upgrade key does not work ... I'm guessing MS must have blacklisted all keys that were unactivated after the offer deadline. Once again big thanks to the original OP for such a well written post :worthy:

Hi there, This is really interesting, and I've spent most of the afternoon trying to understand. I got 3 WMC upgrade keys last year, but activated none of them, so obviously they're dead now. Please forgive me if this has already been asked, but from the OP: "The procedure (duration 1.5+ hours depending on Internet speed) (the use of a Virtual Machine is highly recommended) 0) Disconnect from the Internet 1) Install Windows 8 Pro using the Windows 8 Pro KMS client setup key (GVLK) ending J8CK4 2) KMS activate using Microsoft Toolkit 3) Use the "Add feature" function to upgrade to WMC, using the Pro WMC default key ending QGJXW 4) Install the KB2871389 update 5) Connect to the Internet 6) Visit the Windows Store and start the Windows 8.1 upgrade 7) Go have a lunch break, watch a movie or take a nap 8) Once the Windows 8.1 upgrade completes, the procedure is complete The result You will find a set of activation tokens (data.dat, tokens.dat) in \Windows\System32\spp\store\2.0. Sample procedure: 1) Install Windows 8.1 Pro with default key ending C9WKB 2) Upgrade to WMC using default key ending JK7QT 3) Stop SPPSVC 4) Overwrite the files in \Windows\System32\spp\store\2.0 with the tokens created above 5) Insert your WMC upgrade key with "slmgr /ipk wmc-upgrade-key" from elevated command prompt 6) If the WMC upgrade key matches the PC, you can activate online" The line in red. As I don't have a WMC upgrade key, can I install on the same hardware first Win8 Pro, activate with KMS and then buy the upgrade to WMC from the store in order to obtain and activate the key? Then perform the whole process from scratch: "0) Disconnect from the Internet 1) Install Windows 8 Pro using the Windows 8 Pro KMS client setup key (GVLK) ending J8CK4 2) KMS activate using Microsoft Toolkit 3) Use the "Add feature" function to upgrade to WMC, using the Pro WMC default key ending QGJXW 4) Install the KB2871389 update 5) Connect to the Internet 6) Visit the Windows Store and start the Windows 8.1 upgrade 7) Go have a lunch break, watch a movie or take a nap 8) Once the Windows 8.1 upgrade completes, the procedure is complete 1) Install Windows 8.1 Pro with default key ending C9WKB 2) Upgrade to WMC using default key ending JK7QT 3) Stop SPPSVC 4) Overwrite the files in \Windows\System32\spp\store\2.0 with the tokens created above 5) Insert your WMC upgrade key with "slmgr /ipk wmc-upgrade-key" from elevated command prompt 6) If the WMC upgrade key matches the PC, you can activate online" ...as I will then have a valid WMC upgrade key that matches my computer? Thanks very much!

If you install a freshly bought WMC upgrade on Win 8 Pro that was activated by KMS, you may or may not be able to activate WMC. At the start of this year, Microsoft has blocked the ability to activate a WMC upgrade installed on top of a KMS activated Pro. If that block is still in place, then you are out of luck. However, there are some signs to suggest that Microsoft has recently removed or reversed the block in question. If you think that the WMC upgrade is not too expensive ($15 or something) and you don't mind the possibility of it not working at all, you may as well try it. Let us know the result!

yup the block has been removed, I just activated online with free WMC key (once activated earlier) over windows 8 kms

Kelorgo, just wanted to thank you once again for this thread. I've created two wim files (with setproductkey and added token files from this thread) for two of my systems, so these two can be autoactivated with 8.1. Very nice, very much appreciated. Now with the new online 8.1 KMS server, the rest of my systems can be activated as well, but of course this activation is only for 180 days, and depends on how long this (or another server) stays online. I tried backing up data.dat and tokens.dat from this KMS activation as well, but that doesn't work. Also, Josh Cell's ATM doesn't work for KMS activations (forgot about that). So my question to you: do you have any insights on backing up 8.1 KMS activation? If you do, please could you share them with us? Until more is known about 8.1 KMS backup (and emulation etc), I will also keep those "other" systems on 8.0 (KMS activated using CodyQ4's emulator and Murphy78's $oem$ folder based on it). And thanks to multiboot (I use a Grub4dos based system), they don't bite eachother, so I can have w7, w8 and w8.1 on the same PC. Thanks!

As far as I know, there is no method known to back up 8.1 KMS activation.

I was playing around a bit and it does look like Microsoft reversed the WMC-on-KMS block. At least I was able to install Windows 8 Pro, KMS activate, then upgrade with a (used) WMC key matching that particular PC and activate it online. This used to not work at the beginning of this year, after the block. You still can't move a used WMC key to a different PC. I don't have any new, unused WMC keys (either free or non-free), so I couldn't test whether fresh activations are possible or not. If fresh activations are possible, then this would give a way for people to "buy" Windows 8.1 for $15: 1) Install Windows 8 Pro 2) KMS activate 3) Buy the WMC upgrade ($15) 4) Activate WMC online 5) Upgrade to Windows 8.1 via Store

So I can now confirm that I am fully activated online with Windows 8.1 Pro WMC now finally!! So excited. I can also confirm that AFTER MTK ACTIVATED WINDOWS 8 PRO AND FRESHLY BUY WMC UPGRADE KEY (ON PC WANTING TO GET 8.1 PRO WMC ON) FOR 9.99 WORKS WITH THIS METHOD USING GENERIC UPGRADE KEYS. MY METHOD: after installing (offline of course) Windows 8 Pro (generic install) and activating with MTK 2.4.9 Ez activation, then rebooted into activated windows 8 pro. went to add features. ACTUALLY bought the upgrade key for 9.99. Used that to install WMC, which activated it after reboot and then left my computer online for a decent amount of time to "register my first install machine" just in case. Then i installed windows update to install store windows 8.1 update. After which time my computer booted into 8.1 Pro WMC and was activated with same key from before. Then decided to copy the token files (just in case even though i do not even use those specific token files for activation later). Then decided to put this activation guide to the test by following it to a T using generic install Windows 8 Pro key, (offline) activated with MTK 2.4.9, rebooted into activated Windows Pro 8, add features, installed generic WMC upgrade key, rebooted into non-activated Windows 8 Pro WMC, installed windows update to add store update to 8.1, (online), downloaded store update, then booted into non-activated Windows 8.1 Pro WMC, stopped svppc service, copied token files. fresh installed of windows 8.1 pro WMC (generic install), (offline) stopped svppc service, pasted copied keys from GENERIC Windows 8 Pro + Generic WMC upgrade + Store update install (not the one i copied for my RETAIL BOUGHT WMC upgrade key (even though im guessing those might work too but dont care to test them), then slmgr.vbs -ipk (PREVIOUSLY FRESHLY BOUGHT WMC upgrade key from Windows 8 that i bought just before), then connected to internet, waited 2 mins, went to activate windows online and BAM! completely activated now for only $9.99. Sounds pretty good to me. Going to do the same method for my desktop now which will cost me another 9.99 buying it on that machine but hell ill take that anyday. So happy to finally be done. :worthy::worthy::worthy:

Thanks for the detailed report and accurate explanation. This is good news! I also did my own testing as well and I can reliably activate an existing (used) WMC upgrade key on top of a KMS activated Windows 8 Pro, as long as the key matches the PC. We can conclude that Microsoft definitely reversed the block of WMC-on-KMS they did early this year.

Is there any way to create an iso with the downloaded upgrade files?

http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/49628-MSMG-Toolkit-to-Convert-Windows-8-1-RTM-to-Windows-8-1-RTM-GA-ISO-Image

Generic tokens + WMC key + Office 2013 phone activation As far as I know, it is possible to successfully restore activation of phone activated Win8.1 or Office 2013. Now lets say I install Win 8.1, replace tokens with generic ones and activate Win 8.1 with free WMC key and Office 2013 via phone. After that I backup my activation, reinstall Windows and restore activation. As I understand in this case Office remains activated, coz it was activated via phone, but Windows activation isn't restored, because it was online activation. So my question is this: if entering WMC key will activate Windows in this scenario, or Office phone activation changes tokens to much and WMC key won't be accepted?

Although both the Windows and Office activation information is stored in the same file, they are separate entities and don't affect each other. I have installed Windows 8 Pro using the key ending J8CK4 and activated it later by phone activation with a mak key. Then added WMC feature using the WMC promo key from microsoft and that was a year ago. Recently, I have upgraded my Windows 8 Pro with WMC to Windows 8.1 Pro with WMC via Store. I used Advance Tokens Manager to back up the activation. By the way, I have a MS Pro Plus 2013 installed activated online. What I have noticed is that the procedure in this thread talks about a generic key used in getting the data.dat and the tokens.dat quoted below: "1) Install Windows 8 Pro using the Windows 8 Pro KMS client setup key (GVLK) ending J8CK4 2) KMS activate using Microsoft Toolkit 3) Use the "Add feature" function to upgrade to WMC, using the Pro WMC default key ending QGJXW" Now, the question is: What if I would like to have a clean install using a Windows 8.1 iso? Can I use my data.dat and tokens.dat to get activated again after fresh install provided that I first install Windows 8.1 Pro with default key and then add WMC using default key, then insert my data.dat and tokens.dat (note that I did not use a generic key as per instruction) and finally insert my own WMC from microsoft? My other concern is the other laptop that I previously used had a Windows 8 Pro with WMC installed and activated online solely via the WMC key using a Windows 8 Pro with WMC ISO. Installed it using a default WMC key and actvated it using the WMC key from Microsoft before microsoft block the exploit. The question is after Upgrading it into Windows 8.1 Pro with WMC can I get the data.dat and tokens.dat for future clean install activation?
Quote Originally Posted by gonz621 View Post Hi, Newbie here. You don't have to do it exactly like that though, if you already have a computer up and running activated in a different way. What if I would like to have a clean install using a Windows 8.1 iso? Yes, this is a perfectly good solution. Note that in both cases the tokens.dat/data.dat you get will not be generic (it has some personal info), so don't share it with others.
So, does it mean that I can have a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro with WMC using my own data.dat and tokens.dat and then reactivate right? If I do the KMS to WMC to W8.1 Pro with WMC, I will get a genuine and activated W8.1 retail plus the token?

No. If you used KMS anywhere in your activation, it will not work for 8.1.

That is incorrect, and the whole point of my original post is that you can upgrade to 8.1 via the Store even if you used KMS activation on 8 before adding WMC. Also, you can then use the 8.1 resulting Pro WMC tokens for a clean installation of 8.1 and it will accept WMC key. Whether you use your own WMC key or a default key to upgrade 8 Pro to WMC doesn't matter. In summary, both of these paths work: 1) Install 8 Pro, KMS activate, WMC upgrade with default key, store upgrade to 8.1, backup tokens, insert your WMC key, activate 2) Install 8 Pro, KMS activate, WMC upgrade with your own key, activate, store upgrade to 8.1, backup tokens In both cases, you end up with an activated 8.1 Pro WMC, and a set of tokens which in the future allows this path: * Install 8.1 Pro with default key, WMC upgrade with default key, restore tokens, insert your WMC key, activate The bottom line: the only thing that was the issue before is having a clean install of 8.1 accept your WMC key. By going through the process of installing 8 Pro WMC first and upgrading it to 8.1 via the store you end up with a set of tokens that solves this issue.

Yes.
